What is R-22?
R-22 is an HCFC refrigerant that is often used in air-conditioning equipment. To protect the Earth’s protective ozone layer, the United States is phasing out R-22.
Is R-22 illegal to use?
No. R-22 is not illegal to purchase or use. The EPA regulation that went into effect on 1/1/2020 states:
"In 2020, R-22 will no longer be produced or imported. After 2020, only recovered, recycled, or reclaimed supplies of R-22 will be available.
The production (not use) of R-22 is being phased out. You are not required to stop using R-22 air conditioners nor to replace existing equipment." (EPA)
Does my AC system use R-22?
Look at the label on the compressor unit outside. The system label contains the type of refrigerant the system uses. Systems labeled with R-22 or HCFC-22 use the old refrigerant. Systems with R-410A use the approved refrigerant.
What is replacing R-22?
The most common replacement to R-22 is R-410A. R-410A is a non-ozone-depleting HFC refrigerant blend.
Am I required to replace my R-22 system?
No, homeowners are not required to replace their old R-22 AC systems. Homeowners have multiple options:
1. Repair and maintain your current AC system
2. Retrofit your R-22 AC System (not recommended)
3. Replace your AC system
We do not recommend retrofitting your AC system to work with another refrigerant. It may void the manufacturer warranty.
